Change Your Route

If you are experiencing sun glare during your daily commute, a simple solution to avoid sun glare is to change your route. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If you are driving try to avoid a route that causes you to drive directly into the sun. It may be possible to modify your route so that most of your travel is out of the sun’s direct glare.

Adjust Your Travel Time

Check your local weather service for sunrise and sunset times. Typically, sun glare happens at sunrise and sunset. It is best to avoid traveling during these times because the sun is at a lower angle in the sky. This angle makes it much more likely that the sun will shine directly into your eyes and create a glare.

Even if you change your route and adjust your travel time, you can still be injured in a car accident. If you are the victim in a car accident, consult with an experienced personal injury lawyer. Wear Sunglasses

Sunglasses can drastically improve visibility in bright sunlight. Polarized sunglasses can be especially beneficial. Polarization reduces light glare and improves vision and safety in the sun. Avoid sun glare by wearing polarized sunglasses.

Use Your Sun Visors

Your vehicle’s sun visors are there to shield your eyes from the sun. Use your vehicle’s sun visors to avoid sun glare. If necessary, purchase a secondary visor. The addition can help to fill the gap not covered by the main visor.

Virtual Visor

You may not have to rely on the same old sun visor for much longer. This year, Bosch debuted the Virtual Visor at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Virtual Visor features a single, transparent LCD panel, a driver-facing camera with AI facial detection, and analysis and tracking software. It identifies the sun’s shadow on the driver’s face to block the sun’s glare and not the view of the road ahead.

Tint Your Windows

Window tinting is the process of applying a thin laminate film to a vehicle’s glass in order to darken it. Use window tinting to avoid sun glare. The film helps to block sunrays so your visibility is not affected. Every state has its own laws regarding the level of darkness it allows for automotive window tints.

What Are Nevada’s Window Tinting Laws?

Nevada Revised Statute 484D.440 provides for restrictions on tinting of windshield or side or rear window. Nevada window tinting law provides as follows:

  • Non-reflective window tinting is allowed on the front side windows. Only if the light transmission is at least 35 percent, with a tolerance of 7 percent.
  • Rear side windows can have non-reflective tinting. As long as the vehicle has outside mirrors on each side. The mirrors must be located to reflect a view of the highway to the driver through each mirror. This must be for a distance of at least 200 feet. Vehicles manufactured before 1993 that have tinting prior to 1993 are not subject to this prohibition.
  • The windshield may have a transparent material applied. As long as the bottom edge of the material is not less than 29 inches above the top of the driver’s seat. This is when the seat is in its rearmost and lowermost position with the vehicle on a level surface. The material may not be red or amber.

Take a Break

If the sun glare is creating a dangerous driving condition, take a break. Safely pull off the road and wait a few minutes. The sun’s position can change quickly and taking a few minutes to let the sun adjust can create a safer travel experience.

Keep It Clean

Clean your windshield to avoid sun glare. Dirt on your windshield makes the sunlight refract and scatter, which intensifies the glare. When you are facing sunlight, it is easier to see out of clean glass. Clean the windshield prior to driving. A car’s windshield cleaning device can leave washer fluid remnants. These wet drops can reflect the sun and make it harder to drive.

Keep your dashboard clutter-free. Remember, light scatters because it bounces at varying angles off an object’s uneven surface. If the surface is smooth, such as with items on your dash, light reflects at one angle. This angle can be directly in your eyes. This is what we know as glare. Sunlight can reflect off of any shiny object on your dashboard. If the reflection hits your eyes, you will have trouble seeing. Store items out of the sun’s reach by placing them in the trunk, center console, or glove compartment.

Fix Cracks In Your Windows

Cracks in car windows cause sunlight to scatter and make it difficult to see. Fix window cracks as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary glare.
