As ridesharing services become more popular, it should be no surprise that the amount of accidents involving ridesharing services is on the rise.
According to a study by the University of Chicago and Rice University, there has been a 2% to 3% increase in traffic deaths since 2011 that are attributable to rideshare services. This equates to an additional 1,100 traffic fatalities each year.
Researchers calculated these statistics using data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and compared them to the dates that Uber and Lyft launched in selected cities. They also checked accident rates in cities that were within the relative vehicle miles traveled. The researchers found that the rate of traffic fatalities increased significantly after San Francisco launched Uber in 2010 and that this phenomenon was replicated in other cities such as New York and Los Angeles.
The researchers also associated the increase in ridesharing with the increase in congestion, the declining use of public transportation, an increase in arterial vehicle miles traveled, excessive gas consumption, and annual hours of delay in traffic.
