    Nevada Speed Laws

    A discussion about speeding should start with an understanding of what is considered speeding in Nevada. Below we will provide relevant portions of Nevada speed laws.

    Nevada Revised Statute 484B.600

    Nevada Revised Statute 484B.600(1) provides the following:

    1. It is unlawful for any person to drive or operate a vehicle of any kind or character at:
      1. A rate of speed greater than is reasonable or proper, having due regard for the traffic, surface and width of the highway, the weather and other highway conditions.
      2. Such a rate of speed as to endanger the life, limb or property of any person.
      3. A rate of speed greater than that posted by a public authority for the particular portion of highway being traversed.
      4. A rate of speed that results in the injury of another person or of any property.
      5. In any event, a rate of speed greater than 80 miles per hour.

    Nevada Revised Statute 484B.603

    There are other times that a driver may be required to slow down. Nevada Revised Statute 484B.603(1) states the following:

    1. The fact that the speed of a vehicle is lower than the prescribed limits does not relieve a driver from the duty to decrease speed when approaching and crossing an intersection, when approaching and going around a curve, when approaching a hill crest, when traveling upon any narrow or winding highway, or when special hazards exist or may exist with respect to pedestrians or other traffic, or by reason of weather or other highway conditions, and speed must be decreased as may be necessary to avoid colliding with any person, vehicle or other conveyance on or entering a highway in compliance with legal requirements and the duty of all persons to use due care.

    Nevada Revised Statute 484B.607

    Drivers also have a responsibility to slow down when approaching a traffic incident. Nevada Revised Statute 484B.607(1) states the following:

    1. Upon approaching any traffic incident, the driver of the approaching vehicle shall, in the absence of other direction given by a law enforcement officer:
      1. Decrease the speed of the vehicle to a speed that is reasonable and proper, pursuant to the criteria set forth in subsection 1 of NRS 484B.600;
      2. Proceed with caution;
      3. Be prepared to stop; and
      4. If possible, drive in a lane that is not adjacent to the lane or lanes where the traffic incident is located unless roadway, traffic, weather or other conditions make doing so unsafe or impossible.

    Nevada Revised Statute 484B.363

    Drivers should be especially cautious in school zones. Pursuant to NRS 484B.363, the speed limit in school zones is either 15 or 25 miles per hour. These speed limits are in effect on school days from half an hour before school begins to half an hour after school ends.

    Speeding Consequences

    • Loss of vehicle control
    • Reduced effectiveness of seat belts and/or car seats
    • Increased stopping distance after the driver perceives a danger
    • Increased degree of crash severity leading to more severe injuries

    If a speeding driver injures you in a Las Vegas area car accident, contact an experienced personal injury lawyer. Now is not the time to go it alone as a car accident victim. The experienced team at Anthem Injury Lawyers can help you protect your rights and help you get the personal injury settlement that you deserve. Tips to Combat Speeding

    Do you have a need for speed? You can avoid the temptation to put the pedal to the metal by doing the following:

    • Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination
    • Avoid driving while stressed
    • Use your cruise control when appropriate
    • Follow Nevada speed laws as provided above
    • Drive sober

    Keep Yourself Safe

    • Give the speeding driver space
    • Remain calm
    • Contact the authorities if necessary
