    What Is Distracted Driving?

Distracted driving is driving while doing anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there are three main types of distraction: visual, manual, and cognitive.

    Visual

Visual distractions take your eyes off the road and include the following:

    • Looking at your phone
    • Checking out the view on a scenic drive
    • Looking at passengers in the back seat
    • Searching around the car for lost items
    • Focusing on a map or GPS device
    • Glancing at your reflection in the car mirrors
    • Turning to look at an accident on the side of the road

    Manual

Manual distractions take your hands off the wheel and include the following:

    • Using your phone
    • Adjusting the radio, mirrors, or temperature dials
    • Using your hands to sing or dance along with music
    • Eating
    • Drinking
    • Smoking
    • Cleaning
    • Searching around for things
    • Helping a child or pet
    • Fixing your hair or makeup

    Cognitive

Cognitive distractions take your mind off of driving and include the following:

    • Checking your phone
    • Conversations with passengers
    • Conversations on the phone
    • Experiencing strong emotions
    • Daydreams
    • Thoughts about work

If you were paying attention to the above lists, you may have noticed that phone use appeared under all three types of distractions. That is because your cell phone is a visual, manual, and cognitive distraction. When looking at distracted driving, cell phone use can provide key insights.

CMT’s 2022 US Distracted Driving Report is based on driving data collected from CMT’s DriveWell platform. The platform measures the driving habits of millions of people every day. The report found that distracted driving didn’t follow the same pattern as other risky driving behaviors (like speeding). Unlike other risky driving behaviors, phone distraction has continued to rise. Below are some highlights from the report.

    Nevada Distracted Driving Laws

Distracted driving is both dangerous and illegal. Especially when the distraction involves your cell phone. In Nevada, it is a crime to physically handle a cell phone or other electronic device while driving. Under Nevada Revised Statute 484B.165(1), it is illegal to do the following while operating a motor vehicle on a Nevada highway:

    • Manually type or enter text into a cellular telephone or other handheld wireless communications device, or send or read data using any such device to access or search the Internet or to engage in nonvoice communications with another person, including, without limitation, texting, electronic messaging and instant messaging.
    • Use a cellular telephone or other handheld wireless communications device to engage in voice communications with another person, unless the device is used with an accessory which allows the person to communicate without using his or her hands, other than to activate, deactivate or initiate a feature or function on the device.

    Focus on Driving

When you get behind the wheel, it is important to focus on the road and just drive. If you are having difficulty focusing, safely pull over and focus on whatever is distracting you. If you have bad habits, now is the time to break the habits. The most important habit you can break is using your phone while driving. Make your car a no phone zone. Store your car out of your reach when you are driving or turn it off. A text or a call isn’t worth causing an accident.
