Tesla has made the news again for a recall. This recall was the butt of quite a few jokes. Tesla recently announced that it is recalling over 500,000 vehicles in the United States due to its Boombox feature, a 2020 update that allows drivers to play sounds such as a bleating goat or a fart noise outside the vehicle. This recall is the gassiest of quite a few recalls that Tesla has issued recently, including those that will be discussed below.

Why the Big Stink?
Why the big stink about fart noises? It’s not because the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) doesn’t like fart noises. It is actually about safety.
Hybrid and electric vehicles have minimum sound requirements and pedestrian warning systems. These minimum requirements are meant to reduce the risk of pedestrian collisions, especially for the blind and visually impaired. According to the NHTSA, when the Boombox emits noise it may actually cause the pedestrian warning system to be noncompliant with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Recalls
This recall is just one of many of the latest Tesla recalls that have been issued for Tesla vehicles. The NHTSA or the manufacturer issue a recall if either determines that either of the following are true:
- A vehicle or equipment creates an unreasonable safety risk
- A vehicle or equipment fails to meet a minimum safety standard

Latest Tesla Recalls
Since October 2021, Tesla has issued a number of recalls, including the Boombox recall. These recalls have involved both software and hardware issues. The most recent recalls have been remedied with software updates. Some of the most recent recalls are discussed below.
Seat Belt Chime
In February 2022, Tesla recalled 817,143 vehicles due to an issue with the seat belt chime. The seat belt chime is supposed to sound if the driver’s seat belt is unbuckled. According to the safety recall report, the chime was not sounding under certain circumstances. This could result in the driver driving the vehicle without wearing a seat belt. This issue was fixed with a software update.
Rolling Stops
Around the same time as the seat belt chime recall, Tesla also issued a recall for 53,822 vehicles with its “full self-driving” software. The software included a feature that was programmed to slowly roll through stop signs in some scenarios. Tesla disabled this feature in a software update.
Video Games
While this wasn’t exactly a recall, it was still a significant software update related to safety concerns. In December 2021, Tesla issued a software update disabling video game play on its cars’ touchscreens when they are in motion. While the feature was called “Passenger Play,” there was nothing preventing drivers from playing video games while driving.
Check for Recalls
Tesla vehicles are not the only vehicles with recalls. No matter what you drive, you should regularly check for recalls. The NHTSA offers several tools to help you find out if your car has a recall.
Search for Safety Issues and Recalls
On the NHTSA website, you can enter in information to find out about safety issues and recalls. The following are available search options:
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Vehicle
- Tires
- Equipment
- Other criteria
Sign Up for Emails
On the NHTSA website, you can sign up for the NHTSA’s Recall Notification Email System. Once you enter your email address, you will receive notifications about recalls.
Get Recall Alerts on Your Phone
The NHTSA offers the option to get recall alerts on your phone via NHTSA’s free SaferCar app. SaferCar will send you an alert on your mobile device when it discovers a safety recall for the vehicle or equipment you entered.
