Alabama
If you are new to Alabama, you must get an Alabama license within 30 days of becoming a resident of the state.
Alaska
If you will be driving in Alaska for more than 90 days, you must get an Alaska driver license.

Arkansas
New residents to Arkansas must obtain the license within 30 days of becoming an Arkansas resident.
California
Application for license must be made not more than 10 days after establishing residence in California.
Colorado
After becoming a Colorado resident, you must transfer your driver license within 30 days.
Connecticut
Once you have established residency in Connecticut, you have 30 days to transfer your out-of-state license to Connecticut.
Delaware
If you move into Delaware from another state, you must apply for a Delaware driver’s license within 60 days after becoming a resident.
Florida
As a new Florida resident, you must obtain a valid Florida driver license within 30 days of establishing residency to drive on Florida roads.
Georgia
You must apply for a Georgia driver’s license within 30 days of becoming a resident of the Peach State.
Hawaii
You may drive in Hawaii with a valid driver’s license issued by another state if you are 18 years of age or older. If you wish to transfer your out-of-state driver’s license to a Hawaii driver license, you must comply with certain requirements. This must occur before the expiration of your out-of-state license.
Idaho
If you have an out-of-state driver’s license, you’ll need to transfer it for an Idaho license within 90 days of moving to the state.
Illinois
Drivers moving to Illinois may use their valid driver’s license from their home state or country for 90 days.
Indiana
When you become a resident of Indiana, you have 60 days to obtain an Indiana driver’s license. The driver license deadlines for new residents only apply if you hold a valid driver’s license from another state.
Iowa
New Iowa residents with a valid out-of-state license, must have proof of residence when applying for an Iowa license.
Kansas
New Kansas residents are required to obtain a Kansas driver’s license within 90 days of establishing residency.
Kentucky
Persons moving into Kentucky have 30 days to obtain a Kentucky driver’s license.
Louisiana
New residents are required to transfer their out-of-state license to Louisiana within 30 days of establishing a residence in this state.
Maine
You must obtain a new Maine license within 30 days of becoming a resident of the Pine Tree State.
Maryland
New Maryland residents must obtain a Maryland driver’s license within 60 days.
Massachusetts
If you have a driver’s license from another state, you need to convert it to a Massachusetts driver’s license. You must do this upon becoming a resident in Massachusetts.
Michigan
To convert your out-of-state license to Michigan, take all required documents to a local Secretary of State branch office.
Minnesota
To drive legally in Minnesota, you have 60 days after becoming a Minnesota resident in which to apply for your Minnesota driver’s license.
Mississippi
If you are new to the Magnolia State, you must visit the nearest driver’s license office to apply for a Mississippi license. You must present the following:
- A valid out-of state license
- Birth certificate
- An original social security card
- Two proofs of residency
Missouri
New Missouri residents with an out-of-state driver license must provide acceptable documents.
Montana
Individuals moving to Montana must apply for a Montana driver’s license within 60 days of moving to the state.
Nebraska
Any new resident with a valid license from another state must obtain a Nebraska license within 30 days.
Nevada
You must be a Nevada resident and provide a Nevada street address to obtain a Nevada driver’s license. Nevada Revised Statutes 482.103 and 483.141 define “resident.” Under these statutes, a resident does not include a person who is any of the following:
- Actual tourist
- Out-of-state student
- Foreign exchange student
- Border state employee
- Seasonal resident
New Hampshire
Once a person has established residency in New Hampshire, they have a maximum of 60 days to obtain a New Hampshire driver license.
New Jersey
If you move to New Jersey, you must transfer your out-of-state license within 60 days of your move.
New Mexico
Once you have established residency in New Mexico, you are required to surrender your license from any other state. You are required to apply for a New Mexico license.
New York
You must exchange your-out-state driver license within 30 days of becoming a resident of New York.
North Carolina
Within 60 days of establishing a permanent residence in North Carolina, new residents must get a North Carolina driver license
North Dakota
Nonresidents are not required to obtain a license until 60 days after residence has been established in North Dakota. A person is deemed a resident of North Dakota when they have lived there for 90 days.
Ohio
Within 30 days of establishing residency, you will need an Ohio driver license for yourself. You are considered an Ohio resident once you do any of the following:
- Take a job
- Sign a lease
- Buy a home
- Enroll children in school
Oklahoma
A driver license from another state can be transferred to Oklahoma without having to take a written or drive test.
Oregon
As a new resident of the Beaver State, you have 30 days to get an Oregon driver license.
Pennsylvania
All new residents must obtain a Pennsylvania driver’s license within 60 days of establishing Pennsylvania residency.
Rhode Island
Within 30 days of moving to Rhode Island and establishing residency, you must obtain a Rhode Island operator’s license.
South Carolina
If you permanently move to South Carolina, you must apply for a South Carolina license. You must turn in your out-of-state license when you get one in South Carolina.
South Dakota
All applicants are required to provide two documents proving their residential/physical address. These documents must show their full name, physical/residential address, and be less than one year old.
Tennessee
New residents must obtain a Tennessee driver license no later than 30 days after establishing residency.
Texas
New Texas residents have a 90 day grace period to apply for a Texas driver license.
Utah
Utah does not have a grace period to change an out-of-state driver license to a Utah license. It simply requires a resident to have a valid Utah driver license when driving in Utah.
Vermont
New residents to the Green Mountain State must obtain a Vermont driver license. This must be done no longer than 60 days after moving to Vermont.
Virginia
If you move to Virginia, you must obtain a Virginia driver’s license within 60 days.
Washington
After you move to Washington, you have 30 days to get your Washington driver license.
West Virginia
Within 30 days of taking up residence in West Virginia, a driver must apply to the DMV for a driver’s license
Wisconsin
If you move to the Badger State, you must apply for a Wisconsin driver license within 60 days of establishing Wisconsin residency.
Wyoming
In Wyoming, you have one year from the time you establish residency to be issued a Wyoming driver license. Please note that the driver license deadlines for new residents are different for certain states. You must apply for a Wyoming license upon establishing Wyoming residency if your license is issued by one of the following states:
- Georgia
- Massachusetts
- Michigan
