How Many Uninsured Drivers Are On the Road?
The Insurance Research Council recently released the following report:
The report examined the following:
- Trends in the percentage of uninsured motorists in each state based on uninsured motorists and bodily injury claim frequencies from 2015 through 2019.
It found that in 2019:
- One in eight drivers on U.S. roads was without auto insurance.
- The countrywide uninsured motorist rate was 6 percent.
- Uninsured motorist rates varied substantially across states, ranging from 1 percent in New Jersey to 29.4 percent in Mississippi.
- In Nevada, the estimated percentage of uninsured drivers was 4 percent.
Uninsured Drivers Cost Everyone Else
Why does the number of uninsured drivers matter? Uninsured drivers cost everyone else money. The study found the following:
- Insured drivers paid, on average, approximately $78 per insured vehicle in 2016. This was for insurance protection against at-fault drivers who are uninsured or who have inadequate insurance to cover the medical costs and property damage incurred by others.
- Across the U.S., insured drivers in 2016 paid more than $13 billion for uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage
Nevada Auto Insurance Requirements
If you are a driver in Nevada, you are required to have automobile insurance. Nevada requires that automobile liability insurance policies carry minimum coverage of the following:
- $25,000 for bodily injury or death of one person in any one accident.
- $50,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more persons in any one accident.
- $20,000 for injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident.
Coverage must be validated by an insurance company authorized to do business in the State of Nevada.
Nevada LIVE Verification
Nevada LIVE verification applies only to liability insurance. In Nevada, you must present evidence of insurance on a printed card or on a mobile device to register your vehicle. It must be presented at most registration transactions. It must also be carried in your vehicle at all times and presented to any law enforcement officer upon request.
Does Nevada Have a Grace Period?
Uh-oh! What happens if you let your insurance coverage lapse? Nevada has no grace period. A one-day lapse in your insurance coverage will result in a possible suspension of your registration. The minimum penalty is a $250 reinstatement fee.
