When Are Car Seats Required in Nevada?
Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) 484B.157 provides the car seat requirement in Nevada. NRS 484B.157(1) states the following:
- Any person who is transporting a child who is less than 6 years of age and who weighs 60 pounds or less in a motor vehicle operated in this State which is equipped to carry passengers shall secure the child in a child restraint system which:
- Has been approved by the United States Department of Transportation in accordance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards set forth in 49 C.F.R. Part 571;
- Is appropriate for the size and weight of the child; and
- Is installed within and attached safely and securely to the motor vehicle:
1. In accordance with the instructions for installation and attachment provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint system; or
2. In another manner that is approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
What Are the Exceptions to Nevada’s Car Seat Requirement?
Per NRS 484B.157(7), the above statute does not apply:
- To a person who is transporting a child in a means of public transportation, including a taxi, school bus or emergency vehicle.
- When a physician or an advanced practice registered nurse determines that the use of such a child restraint system for the particular child would be impractical or dangerous because of such factors as the child’s weight, physical unfitness or medical condition. In this case, the person transporting the child shall carry in the vehicle the signed statement of the physician or advanced practice registered nurse to that effect.
What Are the Different Types of Car Seats?
There are four types of car seats. The four types and their descriptions are listed below. Remember, the right car seat for your child will change by their age and weight. Review the following four types of car seats to understand what is appropriate for your child. When choosing a car seat keep in mind that not all car seats fit all vehicles. When you select a car seat make sure it fits your child as well as your vehicle.
Rear-Facing Car Seat
The rear-facing car seat is best for a young child. It has a harness and helps protect your child in a crash. In a crash, it cradles and moves with your child to reduce the stress to the child’s fragile neck and spinal cord.
Forward-Facing Car Seat
The forward-facing car seat has a harness and tether that limit your child’s forward movement during a crash.
Booster Seat
The booster seat positions the seat belt so that it fits properly over the stronger parts of your child’s body.
Seat Belt
Once a child outgrows their booster seat, they should still wear a seat belt. How should the seat belt fit? The seat belt should lie across the upper thighs. It should be snug across the shoulder and chest to restrain your child safely in a crash. The seat belt should not rest on the stomach area or across the neck or face.

Do You Know How to Correctly Install a Car Seat?
Once you find the right car seat for your child, you should make sure the car seat is installed correctly. Did you know there are resources in your community to help you with your car seat installation? The NHTSA maintains a directory of car seat inspection stations. At the car seat inspection stations, there are child passenger safety technicians who can do the following:
- Check to make sure your car seats are installed correctly.
- Teach you how to use and install a car seat on your own.
Due to COVID-19, some locations now offer virtual inspections. Use the directory for assistance with installing your car seat.
Do You Know How to Register Your Car Seat?
Once you have purchased the correct car seat for your child and installed it correctly, you should register your car seat. Registering your car seat with the manufacturer gives the manufacturer the ability to contact you about recalls and safety notices. If your car seat manufacturer issues a recall, it will fix the problem for free.
Do You Know How to Use the Car Seat?
You should use the car seat, booster seat, or seat belt every time your child is in your vehicle. Not only is it required by law but it is also the best way to keep your child safe in a crash. Make sure you use the car seat correctly, every time. How do you properly use the car seat? Use the below tips from the NHTSA:
- Properly position the car seat harness straps on your child.
- Buckle the harness and chest clips and tighten.
- Make sure the chest clip is at armpit level.
