    How Red Light Cameras Work

Red light cameras are a form of automated enforcement. An automated enforcement system uses an electronic camera to enforce traffic laws by doing the following:

    • Assisting with detection of infractions
    • Providing photo/video documentation of the vehicle or driver violating the traffic law

A red light camera assists with the detection of drivers who run red lights. The red light camera is connected to the traffic signal and to sensors that monitor traffic flow just before the crosswalk or stop line. The cameras automatically capture any vehicle that does not stop during the red phase of the traffic signal. Every picture and/or video is reviewed prior to a ticket being issued. If a violation occurs, then a ticket is issued. The penalty depends on the jurisdiction.

    Red Light Cameras in Nevada

Nevada does not currently have red light camera communities. Nevada law currently prohibits the use of red-light cameras. Unless the camera is handheld by an officer or mounted in a vehicle or facility of a law enforcement agency.

Nevada Revised Statute 484A.600 states the following:

    • A governmental entity and any agent thereof shall not use photographic, video, or digital equipment for gathering evidence to be used for the issuance of a traffic citation for a violation of chapters 484A to 484E, inclusive, of NRS unless the equipment is held in the hand or installed temporarily or permanently within a vehicle or facility of a law enforcement agency.

In 2019 a bill was introduced to allow the use of cameras to help catch vehicles that run red lights. While the bill was introduced, no action was taken on the proposed legislation.
