The REAL ID Act
Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005. President George W. Bush signed the REAL ID Act into law on May 11, 2005. The original text for the REAL ID Act can be found in Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005, P.L. 109-13, §§ 201-207, 119 Stat. 231, 312-16 (2005).
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the REAL ID Act:
- Establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards.

REAL ID Instructions for Nevada Residents
If you are a Nevada resident, you may be wondering how to get your Real ID before the REAL ID deadline. Simply follow the instructions below.
Gather Your Documents
Your REAL ID application requires several documents. To apply, you must present all of the following documents listed below:
- Proof of Identity (one document)
- If you have changed your name, Proof of All Name Change(s)
- Proof of Social Security number
- Proof of your Nevada residential address (two documents)
- An Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card (DMV 002)
Apply in Person
You must apply in person at your Department of Motor Vehicles. You will need to make an appointment.
Possibly Pay a Fee
In Nevada, there is no additional charge for a REAL ID if you are completing another license/ID transaction. This includes renewal or adding an endorsement.
The fee for a REAL ID only (Change of Information) is as follows:
- $9.25 for a driver’s license
- $8.25 for an ID card
- $13.25 for a commercial license
- Other driver’s license/ID changes of information, such as an address change or name change, may be included with no additional fee.
